When students think of people to thank at graduation, they often turn to professors and staff members who have poured blood, sweat, and tears into helping them walk the stage. However, there are many more individuals behind the scenes who deserve our gratitude. One such couple is Cary and Sally Eaves. These two individuals truly exemplify what it means to leave a legacy of generosity, and most recently, they were pivotal in renovating Pete’s Place. Let’s take a closer look at their impact and recognize what they’ve done for 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ.
Sally Eaves is a woman who truly bleeds blue and gold. She attended 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ from 1971 to 1975 and has served on the Board of Trustees for over 13 years. She has been quietly invested in students’ lives from behind the scenes for many years. Cary and Sally care deeply about giving and student success—so much so that they recently received the Keeper of the Flame Award. This award honors individuals and corporations who have made lifetime donations of more than $100,000 to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ in one capacity or another.
And it’s not just Cary and Sally. Sally’s family has been donating to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ for generations, contributing several endowed scholarships and exemplifying what it means to give selflessly.
Cary and Sally have said that they “want to establish a legacy as people who are faithful to the Lord and to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ—not just a one-generation legacy, but one that spans generations, for future generations to pass on.”
Sally is not the type to donate for recognition. She and her husband give so that students can be proud to be 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ students and future alumni. The most recent example of their generosity is the remodeling of Pete’s Place—a project that would not have been possible at this scale without the Eaves’ support.
The story of Pete’s Place begins with a conversation between Dr. Hedgepath and Sally Eaves. One of the first things Dr. Hedgepath brought to the Board of Trustees was the need to update Pete’s Place. Sally immediately knew it would be her next project.
The renovation was completed in less than a semester, exceeding all expectations. Sally and Cary contributed almost all of the funds for the remodel. “I want the students to be proud of Pete’s Place and think of it as home,” Sally said. She envisions the space hosting student activities, concerts, and more. The Eaves aren’t done yet—they’re still planning to add TVs and a grill to further enhance the space.
Sally wants students to know that more projects are on the horizon, and that there’s plenty to be excited about. Her story is just one of many. Dozens of individuals have donated to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ and impacted students’ lives.
Next time you walk into a building on campus, take a moment to look at the names listed there. Behind each one is a story of generosity and commitment to student success. Thanks to individuals like the Eaves, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s tradition of giving continues to shape the student experience—now and for generations to come.
