For more than 25 years, Dr. Pyeatt has been sharing his love of history with 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ students. But outside the classroom, he’s just as passionate about movies, birdwatching, and family history. Many know him from his European and American history classes, and he also directs the honors program and teaches many of its courses. But Dr. Pyeatt is more than just a professor. Let’s take a closer look at the man behind the lectures.
Dr. Pyeatt is a movie lover and enjoys talking about some of his favorites. He’s a big fan of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Zulu, and Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, he enjoys Tolkien’s work so much that he teaches a class on The Lord of the Rings every few years.
Another favorite pastime is birdwatching, which also connects to his love for peafowl and their colorful beauty. He enjoys listening to the songs of birds across the country.
Outside of those hobbies, Dr. Pyeatt also likes crossword puzzles, stamp collecting, and genealogy. He’s passionate about uncovering family history and describes it this way:
“Finding out about one’s family is like a puzzle. Except there is always more to discover and new pieces form.”
True to his profession, Dr. Pyeatt enjoys discussing history and books. Two of his favorites are The Struggle for Mastery in Europe and a biography of Otto von Bismarck.
Faith is also an important part of his conversations with students. His favorite Bible passage is Romans 8:38–39, which he loves for the hope it brings.
From a young age, Dr. Pyeatt knew he wanted to be a professor. History fascinated him, and he dedicated his life to studying and teaching it. When it came time to choose a job, he said:
“I did not choose 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ. 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ chose me.”
He and his wife had prayed for a job north of Lubbock, and God answered with a position just 45 minutes north in Plainview. He quickly fell in love with 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ and has been here since.
With all his experience, he has wisdom to share with new students:
“Take advantage of the opportunity you have been given. Do not waste it.”
Whether he’s teaching honors classes, talking about The Lord of the Rings, or sharing advice with freshmen, Dr. Pyeatt continues to impact 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ with both his knowledge and his passion. If you haven’t met him yet, don’t be surprised if he’s always up for a good conversation.
Stay tuned for the next professor highlight coming soon.
