After years without live music at games, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Pep Band is back, bringing new energy and school spirit to every event. The group has continued to grow since its relaunch and shows no signs of slowing down. Still, many may not know what the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Pep Band is all about. To learn more, we spoke with Dr. King, who leads the program, as well as several students involved.
The man in charge of the Pep Band is Dr. King, a talented music professor who has been teaching at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ for many years. “Pep Band is currently more focused on playing at basketball games,” Dr. King explained. “However, we’re looking toward playing at football games soon.”
There are currently five students in the program, and their main goal is to build talent and strengthen outreach for the group. The band performs at multiple campus events to refine their sound and increase their presence.
The program also offers scholarships and opportunities for growth. 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ used to have a Pep Band a few years back, so there are plenty of instruments ready to find new players. Scholarships are open to all students who are willing to put in the work, and the award even covers the one-credit-hour Pep Band class. The class provides guaranteed practice time and instruction to help students improve their skills.
From the start, students can count on getting performance experience, scholarship support, and the guidance of a dedicated faculty mentor.
Hearing praise from a faculty member or journalist is one thing, but the students in Pep Band share the same enthusiasm.
One junior said, “Dr. King is the best. He’ll help you get better at your instrument. He knows what he’s talking about and has a passion for it.” Another new student added, “Being in Pep Band is really insightful, and it’s fun to get on an instrument and have the chance to play.”
Students appreciate that every member has a role. Unlike other schools that rotate out players and limit stage time, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Pep Band ensures everyone gets to perform and be part of a strong, supportive community.
Dr. King hopes to expand the program as much as possible in the coming year, focusing on outreach and awareness to bring in new members. The band also plans to begin performing at football games starting in the 2026–2027 season.
With new members, growing enthusiasm, and strong faculty support, the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Pep Band is once again hitting all the right notes.
