51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ expands reach of Mieth School of Nursing program
PLAINVIEW, TX — 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University is expanding the reach of its Ben and Betha Mieth School of Nursing to Plainview by adding an opportunity for local students to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at WBU-Plainview upon completion of their pre-nursing coursework.
Beginning this fall, incoming freshmen at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Plainview campus may enter the established pre-nursing track with a new expectation: qualified students will be able to apply for the first Plainview-based Mieth School of Nursing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) cohort, scheduled to begin in Fall 2028. Students accepted into the program will have the option of completing their BSN nursing education in either Plainview or San Antonio. Pre-nursing students from other institutions will also be able to apply to be a part of the first Plainview BSN cohort.
For years, students in Plainview have been able to complete pre-nursing requirements locally before transferring to San Antonio for the BSN nursing program. This expansion changes that trajectory.
“This is a natural next step in 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s mission,” said Dr. Rebekah Grigsby, Dean of the Mieth School of Nursing. “Our students in Plainview have always been capable, called, and committed. Now they will have the opportunity to stay rooted in their community while completing one of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s most respected academic programs.”
51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ is already making plans to have facilities in place in Plainview for the launch of nursing courses in 2028. The two-campus model will allow students in both Plainview and San Antonio to participate in a blend of face-to-face and online instruction, with courses originating from either campus.
That approach will expand scheduling options while maintaining the hands-on nature of nursing education. Online components will incorporate immersive technology, including virtual reality labs, allowing students to practice clinical skills in realistic, interactive environments.
“This is not distance learning in the traditional sense,” Grigsby said. “Students will still experience the personal instruction, mentoring, and clinical preparation that define Mieth. What changes is the flexibility—students will be able to access expertise and coursework across campuses while remaining in their home community.”
The Kenneth L. Mattox School of Mathematics and Sciences will continue to provide the rigorous science foundation required for nursing preparation.
“This pathway allows us to walk with students from their first semester through their professional training,” said Dr. Adam Reinhart, Dean of the Mattox School of Mathematics and Sciences. “Our goal is to ensure that students are prepared to be accepted into Mieth and equipped to excel once they are there.”
The Mieth School of Nursing is one of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s flagship academic programs, known for blending clinical excellence with Christian compassion. Graduates serve in hospitals, clinics, schools, and mission fields across Texas and beyond. Demand for nurses continues to grow, particularly in rural and underserved regions.
By establishing a Plainview-based BSN cohort, 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ is aligning its academic mission with regional workforce needs while remaining faithful to its Christian identity.
“This is about more than geography,” Grigsby said. “It is about calling, access, and stewardship. We are creating a pathway for students whom God has called to care for others—and we are doing it in a way that serves both our students and our communities.”
Incoming freshmen interested in nursing may begin the pre-nursing pathway this fall at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ’s Plainview campus. Advising and degree planning are available through the Office of Admissions.
