Dr. Nelms is a mathematics professor at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ Baptist University who has been teaching for many years. He teaches many entry-level math classes that most students are required to take, as well as more complex calculus courses. While many 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ students will have him at least once, who is Dr. Nelms outside the classroom?
Dr. Nelms loves the color green, partly because he thinks it looks good on him but because he also enjoys nature. He also appreciates animals, especially horses and dogs, because of their beauty.
His favorite hobbies include reading and playing video games, both of which help him pass the time and bring him joy. Dr. Nelms is also a great cook and enjoys trying out new recipes.
His favorite Bible verse is Matthew 10:30, which he appreciates because of its connection to math. Dr. Nelms earned his Ph.D. in his 40s and later applied to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ, accepting the position because it was close to family. However, he chose to stay because, as he said, “it is hard to find a place where it is easy to be myself more than anywhere else.”
He also values the students and faculty at 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÊÓƵ. He said, “the faculty are very supportive and are like an extended family. They care for each other. They are also really great at their jobs.”
Dr. Nelms’s advice for freshmen is to practice time management. He said, “learn to manage your time well. It is important to have fun. However, you need to set aside time outside of class to complete coursework.” He also said, “Stay optimistic. Things will work out in the end.”
If you relate to any of Dr. Nelms’s interests, he encourages students to reach out. He always enjoys talking with students about topics beyond the classroom.
